Loews Don CeSar Hotel Review – St. Pete Beach

Nicknamed the “Pink Palace”, and rightfully so, the Loews Don CeSar on St. Pete Beach in Florida is one of the most aesthetically pleasing hotels I think I’ve ever stayed at. To say that Tiff and I felt like eight year old princesses about to meet our Prince Charming while driving my car up towards the hotel valet is an understatement; it was like we were stepping foot into the Great Gatsby. Our excitement could not be contained!

HISTORY

The rich and fascinating history behind the Loews Don CeSar Hotel all but adds to its charm. Developed by Thomas Rowe and opened in 1928, the hotel served as a playground for the rich and famous at the height of the Jazz Age. The likes of F. Scott Fitzgerald, Al Capone, Franklin D. Roosevelt and Lou Gehrig have all graced the Pink Palace with their presence and still, to this day, it continues to charm and impress guests including Elton John and Justin Timberlake. Obviously I requested the same suite and bed that Justin Timberlake occupies when in town so I could secretly throw myself down onto it and rub my body all over it… but my request was oddly rejected. I can’t understand why though…

I could go on and on about the history, but really, you should experience it for yourself. The hotel operates complimentary history tours Tuesday through Sunday at 9:30am and 12:30pm. Meet at the concierge desk to participate.

THE ROOM

The hotel consists of 277 rooms and suites, and for those looking to spoil themselves, there’s a three-bedroom penthouse suite reached only by exclusive elevator key access – so fancy Iggy herself would be all over that!

I was in room 408; a pool and ocean-view guest room with two queen beds. Due to the older nature and construction of the Pink Palace, very few rooms have a balcony which is a shame, because the views from the rooms are incredible. For two, the room was very spacious and offered a desk/chair work station with plenty of outlets for charging, an adorable couch area, a coffee/tea making area complete with a Keurig coffee maker, a closet with two of the most plush hotel robes I’ve ever wrapped myself in, and a decent-sized bathroom. There was a mini fridge in the room, however it is fully stocked, so there’s no space to fit your personal beverages or food in to keep cold.

Now onto my favorite part; the bed. I have come to realize that I am a bit of a pillow snob. My pillows need to be the perfect amount of fluffy softness for my head to sink right into them. If they are too firm or leave my neck sitting up too high, I become cracky Lynda, and no one wants to see that. These pillows and this bed though, seriously, AMAZING. I think I must have fallen asleep in 0.03 seconds – and that never happens to me! Bliss.

Oh, and one of the most awesome things about this hotel is that you can request a pet-friendly room if you don’t want to leave your little guy or gal home alone or with a friend!

POOL AREAS

The hotel has two main pool areas and a hot tub to choose from. Both pools are ocean-facing and are separated by the outdoor bar that sits in between them. The two pools are open to all hotel guests, but the northern pool by the Sea Porch Cafe seemed to attract more family and children, I think because it’s not as deep as the pool to the south. Towels are provided for guests with both pools being surrounded by umbrellas and pool chairs to kick back on. Even on a blistering summers day in the middle of the afternoon, on the last weekend before school started back, we were able to find two open chairs to claim which was nice. I hate circling hotel pools in-hunt for an open pool chair.

BEACH

The Loews Don CeSar hotel provides front-door access to their very own private stretch of beach. Rows of beach chairs, umbrellas, luxury beach beds and cabanas are lined up across the sand and are available for rent at a small price. We did lay out on the beach for a while with an umbrella, but the suns rays were just too intense, so we head back to the pool to cool off.

If you’re into water sports, along the beach you will find a kiosk that rents out kayaks, waverunners and SUP. Prices are a little on the high end, but no different to any other hotel along the Gulf.

There are signs up around the beach warning of stingrays, so just be careful if you choose to take a dip in the ocean; make sure you shuffle your feet in the sand to bring them out of their hiding spot!

SUNSET

There’s no better place in Florida to watch the sunset than from along the Gulf of Mexico! The Loews Don CeSar Hotel offers four fantastic viewpoints to experience the most gorgeous of sunsets:

1. The South Terrace accessible from Level 5 (unless a function is being held)
2. The Bell Tower accessible from Level 5
3. The North Terrace accessible from Level 5 (unless a function is being held)
4. Anywhere along the beach

It’s hard to pick which spot offered the best views, but I think both Tiff and I enjoyed the rooftop terraces best! Here’s some photos from all four angles. I’m seriously in love with this first shot:

AROUND THE HOTEL

We spent part of our day just wandering around and exploring the hotel grounds. It really is such a beautiful place so we wanted to capture as much of is as possible to showcase here. Once again, my GoPro selfie stick came to the rescue – seriously, best $8 ever spent haha. Here’s a look at some of the interiors as well as some shots from a public balcony area looking over the pool.

THE STAFF

I’m usually almost always impressed with hotel staff wherever I go, but the ladies and gents at the Loews Don CeSar Hotel were absolutely phenomenal and went above and beyond in making us feel welcome. From the concierge and our server at brunch to the valet gentlemen; everyone was just so friendly and hospitable. Big shout out to y’all, you guys made our stay what it was so thank you!

.

We wish our one-night stay here could have lasted forever, but all good things come to an end, and we had to wake up insanely early to make the drive back to work on a Monday morning *le sigh*.
