Omni Amelia Island Plantation Resort Review

Why it took me over two years to get here, I have no idea, but once there, it wasn’t hard to see why Amelia Island was voted the fifth best island in the U.S. by USA TODAY.

Streets lined with moss-draped oaks make it hard to remember that the beach is just the next block over. The island eludes a type of charm that makes it feel more old south than Florida; it really is Florida like you’ve never experienced it before. It was hard to believe we were only three hours north of Orlando.

THE ROOM

With its recent $85 million re-imagination expansion, the Omni Amelia Island Plantation Resort now offers 404 ocean-front guest rooms, all with private balconies and patios facing the ocean. The resort property itself is nestled on 1,350 acres of land, making it almost impossible to explore in its entirety.

I was in room 570; an ocean-view guest room with two queen beds and a balcony. The rooms are decorated in soft tones and the vibe is very modern-day chic, beach decor. The room is a great size and offers a desk/chair work station area for two people, a single-seater couch/ottoman combo, a coffee/tea and mini fridge area, closet space, and a larger than normal bathroom with a tub/shower and huge vanity; definitely one of the nicer hotel bathrooms I’ve come across through my travels.

If you’re a regular reader of my hotel reviews here on my blog, then you’ll know that I’m a sucker for soft, fluffy bed pillows. Well, I’m happy to report that these ones did not disappoint. I even happened to fall asleep before my friend one night and she said I looked like “a cute little angel with my head gently nestled amongst a soft tower of pillows”. I slept like a baby.

POOL AREAS

The resort has two main pools to choose from; a family-friendly pool and the adults-only infinity edge pool. Both pool options provide complimentary towels with presentation of your room key.

When you step foot out of the lobby, you are greeted with the most magnificent views of the Atlantic Ocean and the Omni’s multi-tiered pool and lounge deck; the largest pool deck in northeast Florida. This pool deck is no joke – I’ve never seen so many pool chairs in the one place before. I hate having to do laps around the pool just to find two open chairs side-by-side – here, I don’t think it would ever be an issue, there were just so many available!

Located on the upper deck is the adults-only infinity edge pool, my personal favorite as it is kid-free! This pool is the perfect place to unwind and sip a cocktail. We found that no matter what time of day, it never seemed to be overcrowded. There’s also an awesome hot tub on this level with a cascading waterfall which felt so good to sit under.

On the lower deck you will find a 10,000-square foot family-friendly pool, splash park water playground for the little ones and a second hot tub. We spent some time goofing around in this pool. Despite a large number of kids swimming about, the pool is that big that overcrowding and crashing into others isn’t really an issue.

RUM + TEQUILA EXPERIENCE

Earlier this year, the Omni Amelia Island Plantation Resort introduced their newest feature, the Rum + Tequila Experience, a boutique pool-side bar dedicated to artisanal spirits and hand-crafted cocktails.

Our amazing mixologist, Lance, was full of knowledge that he loved sharing with us. I’m pretty sure my friend, Lauren, fell hopelessly in love with him because she wouldn’t stop talking about him for the rest of the day. Lance told us that each rum and tequila featured at the bar had been hand-picked by the resorts Food & Beverage Director from his travels through the Caribbean and Mexico.

Lauren went with the tequila flight with a side of sangrita (not to be mistaken for sangria) to cleanse her palate after each sample and I went with the rum flight which came with a side of mango nectar. You are allowed to select your own spirits to build your flight, but we let Lance recommend what he thought would be best for us.

After enjoying our flights, Lance mixed us up some other amazing cocktails from the menu. I went with a Ruby Red Slipper and a Mojito. I’ve had mojitos in the past, but I’ve never been a fan… until now! Lance mixed the mojito with pure cane sugar syrup and OH MY GOD, what a difference it made. The mojito had this incredible sweetness to it that actually made me go for seconds. So good.

The Rum + Tequila Experience is open Tuesday – Saturday, 11am-5pm on the lower pool deck. The rum and tequila flights start at $25, along with thirteen hand-prepared cocktails, and a food menu that offers fresh sandwiches, wraps and grilled items.

THE BEACH

The Omni Amelia Island Plantation Resort provides front-door access to 3.5 miles of pristine beach. The ocean water isn’t as spectacular as the water you’ll find lower down the south coast of Florida, but it’s still just as refreshing to take a dip in. The sand also isn’t the powder-white sand you grow accustom to at most Florida beaches, but it still builds sand castles!

The beach is lined with cabanas that you can rent out. Towels are complimentary and can be found at the lower-level pool deck, just before you head out of the gate to enter onto the beach.

FOOD & DINING

There are eight different restaurants and dining options available at the Omni Amelia Island Plantation Resort as well as in-room dining. With so many options to choose from, you’re sure to find an offering to suit your craving in terms of both cuisine and price range!

We didn’t have time to try out all the dining offerings, but we did swing by both the Falcon’s Nest and Marché Burette. Falcon’s Nest is a fun, laid back sports-bar type establishment decked out in aviation decor. We arrived late on our first night and after taking some time to settle in, we found Falcon’s nest to be perfect to grab a quick dinner as it is opened until 2am. The wings were great and Lauren totally made love to her grilled cheese sandwich.

Marché Burette is an adorable French deli located in the Shops at Amelia Island Plantation. We enjoyed a late lunch here on a Saturday. We started with a cheese platter which was a treat to my tastebuds – the lavender jam that came with this appetizer was out of this world; I know it sounds weird, but the flavor was exactly how you’d imagine lavender to taste from its scent! Mind blown. Lauren enjoyed hummus and pita chips while I had one of the most delicious ham and grilled cheese sandwiches of my life. Definitely a must if you’re staying at the resort.

THE SPROUTING PROJECT

Still in its infancy, The Sprouting Project consists of a state-of-the-art aquaponic greenhouse, an expansive organic garden, a large collection of beehives and a soon-to-be-completed smokehouse. If you’ve ever been to Disney World and ridden ‘Living With the Land’ at Epcot, this is basically the real deal. I absolutely love the ride at Epcot, so being able to see this come to fruition was super cool in a nerdy kind of way.  It’s the Omni Executive Chefs way of bringing the freshest products possible to guests.

The aquaponic system is fed by two 500-gallon tanks filled with Bream, Sunfish and Bluegill fish. The fish provide nutrients to a diverse collection of fresh produce including heirloom tomatoes, herbs and multiple varieties of organic lettuce. When you exit the greenhouse, you will find yourself at a hand-built bridge that leads out to an apiary that houses more than 70,000 native bees. This honey is harvested and used in seasonal dishes at the Omni Plantation Resort such as honey ice cream, honey caramel and honey vinaigrette.

THE STAFF

All the staff at the Omni Amelia Island Plantation Resort were fantastic, but there were two fellas in particular that just went above and beyond! Tom, one of the doormen at the base of the lobby was a complete gentleman; Lauren and I had asked for directions to one of the restaurants on our first night at the resort, and he insisted on walking us half way so we wouldn’t get lost in the dark. He also told us we could dial 0 anytime from any resort phone and ask for him if we needed any sort of help or directions; such a sweet heart.

The second shout out goes to Mike, another one of the doormen at the base of the lobby. Mike had to be the most enthusiastic and joyous doorman I’ve ever come across and remembered us each and every time we entered into the lobby. He always put a smile on our faces, morning, noon or night!

In two short days, I fell madly in love with Amelia Island and will definitely be planning another visit back!
